There is a popular myth that eating 5 or 6 small meals a day is optimal because it “keeps the metabolism up,” but eating that many times a day could actually be a very bad idea if you’re looking to optimize your digestion. (Eating that often also doesn’t even improve your metabolism, but that’s for another time.) While there are certain situations when people need to eat more often, the majority of people would be best off eating three large meals a day with plenty of time in between. We simply need to look at the digestive process to understand why, and it’s all because of something called the Migrating Motor Complex.
