Cortisol Resistance - A Sneaky Root of Inflammation

Chronic stress is perhaps the most serious health epidemic to date. In modern society, we encounter more daily stressors than we ever have before, and a state of chronic stress has become the new “baseline” for most people thanks to our “sped-up” world. We answer emails, texts, and phone calls all day long, we stare at screens that emit circadian-rhythm-disrupting blue light, we write to-do lists that are three pages long, we feel intense pressure from school, work, friends, and family to always do “more,” we act as caretakers for others but not ourselves, and we put sleep on the backburner. “Work hard, play hard” is the widespread mentality nowadays, and busyness is glorified. In addition to emotional stressors, physical stressors are all around us – inflammatory foods, NSAIDs, toxic environmental chemicals, and hormone disruptors in products we use every day. Undereating, overtraining, gut imbalances, and other internal infections are just a few other stressors on the body that I see commonly with clients.
